Shortly after Elder Queen Sicily Anne’s funeral and that run-in with the butterball racist, all of Momma Mae’s family returned to her house for the repast. Rakaiyah and Davion were the first to get into their rental car, and the rest of the relatives followed suit. Some were shaken up by the white guy’s threat while others wanted to put lead in him on site, but had decided against it due to the fact that they were deep in the South, where the horrid stench of Jim Crow and Confederacy still lingered in 2023. Any negative emotions that had stirred before were immediately left on the porch once everyone returned to Momma Mae’s house.

There were nothing but laughs and shared memories at the repast as the family gathered over plates of soul food. One could tell that Momma Mae and her granddaughter Rakaiyah put their feet into cooking that swine-free spread. While Momma Mae saw cooking and baking as more of a necessity to stave off hunger, Rakaiyah saw them as a therapy. Plus, she thought about having her own catering business back home in Los Angeles. She’d focus on that when she returned to the West Coast, but she needed to figure out why Elder Sicily Anne, her dearly departed great-grandmother, came to her in a dream.

The attendees of Sicily Anne’s homegoing celebration had decided to stay the night…
